Breeding Candidate Requirements
We have several stringent requirements that must be met before you can pursue our breeding services for your dog.
Exam and Testing
First, your dog must be up-to-date with:
- Reproduction exam (which MUST be renewed each breeding cycle)
- Rabies vaccine
- Appropriate flea and tick prevention
- Heartworm test*
*Heartworm tests can be run at the time of the first progesterone test. If your dog tests positive for heartworms, breeding services will be discontinued.
Your dog must also be of sound temperament. They must permit:
- Blood draws
- Semen collection
- Insemination without sedation or excessive restraint
If your dog poses a safety risk to our staff or equipment, we will need to discontinue breeding services.
Animals must be in sound body condition, with no medical conditions that are not well-managed. Our doctors reserve the right to deny reproductive services to any animal based on health issues.
If we diagnose a heart murmur in your pet, they will need to be cleared by a board-certified cardiologist to pursue breeding services.
We strongly recommend that your dog has full health testing as is required by their breed’s parent club. You can find these requirements based on breed at ofa.org. We can provide testing for a number of these conditions.
